"Must See" video about AAUW
~ What can I do? ~
Here are just a few things... "YOU" can do as a member of the Rochester Branch of AAUW
1. Become an informed citizen...
by attending general meetings and study groups which include speakers and timely information. See the links on our website for the Newsletter, Calendar, and Study Groups. Join us on Saturday, February 16 at Charter House to hear about the latest breast cancer research by Dr. Margo Cleary. Coffee is at 9:30 am and our meeting and program is at 10:00 am.
FYI: "In 1972, AAUW was instrumental in the passage of Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds. Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI), an AAUW member, co-authored the law."
Forthcoming community events of interest include Cookie Creations: A Girl Scout Culinary Event at the Radisson Hotel in Rochester on March 25, 2008 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Tickets are $25.00. For more information call 800-598-5516 or River Valleys' website.
2. Promote the vision and mission...
of AAUW by becoming involved with community AAUW Projects such as College is Possible! We can Help! (March), Regional Science Fair (Feburary 2008), Mayo Women's Cancer Conference (October), Beat the Odds, Women's Shelter project and Join the Journey (Sept 16, 2007). Congratulations to our 2007 Science Fair winners... Keern Ansell and Christina Misso. Thanks so much to the supporters and walkers who participated in Join the Journey this year. We had beautiful weather and walked the entire 10 miles! See photos here!
3. Advocate for important public policy issues...
relevant to today's women. Please review the upcoming Minnesota AAUW Resolutions that will be discussed at our state convention in April. One of these resolutions includes embracing the "spirit and aims of the Earth Charter by informing all members and encouraging them to participate in the global partnership for a just, sustainable and peaceful world and to work for the realization of the values and principles of the Earth Charter." Click here for more information about the Earth Charter and here for the actual document.
Contact your Congressperson! Write letters to the editor! Click here for up-to-date information about women's issues. Keep your eyes open for information about the Paycheck Fairness Act.
4. Develop leadership skills and network...
within the community of Rochester, the state of Minnesota, the country of the U.S., and the world. This year our state conference will be held on April 27 to April 29th in Willmer. If you are interested in attending, please contact Alice. The National AAUW Convention will be held in Phoenix this year (June 29-July2).
5. Financially support...
the AAUW Educational Foundation which provides fellowships and grants to women seeking to advance education, research, and self-development for women and to foster equity and positive societal change. Application forms for the 2007-2008 academic year will be available on August 1, 2006. Our Rochester Branch fundraisers include: Apache Mall Event, EF Minnesota Getaway Packages, and the March Luncheon. Also support the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund which provides case support and funding for women who are seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination. Our Rochester Branch fundraisers include: a silent auction, Quarters in Canisters, and a book sale. We will again be making Coins for Cannisters available for the Legal Advocacy fund. One filled cannister is equal to the $5.00 donation recommended for each AAUW menmber. The cannisters will be available at the Sept. General meeting. There will again be a silent auction at the November meeting - so start saving your goodies (Mona Price, LAF).
