Rochester Community Projects

1. Beat the Odds: Beat the Odds is an annual event that celebrates youth who have overcome tremendous odds to become personally and academically successful. The purpose of the program is to raise awareness of the struggles of many youth in our community and recognize their ability to overcome difficulties. The event also provides an opportunity to highlight the support networks and people who reach out to help. For local businesses and leaders it is an opportunity to help college bound students achieve their dream by supporting this fundraising event. Click on this link for more information. Our local AAUW branch supports this local program. For more information contact Ione Schloegel.

2. College is Possible! We Can Help! This is a new community project spearheaded by Ione Schloegel. Click here for an article that was published in the Spring 2006 issue of the AAUW Minnesota Pine. The following is a report of the Rochester Branch project, College Is Possible! We Can Help. The day was patterned after "I'm Going to College" started by Marilyn Hill, of Northfield branch.

3. Join the Journey. Thanks to the AAUW supportors and walkers who participated in the 2007 Join the Journey 10 mile walk. We joined over 800 walkers at Mayo High School and walked around Silver Lake three times. What beautiful weather! We received over $200.00 which stays right here in Olmsted County and directly supports the many women with breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors wore pink t-shirts and supports wore white t-shirts. We complimented our AAUW t-shirts with pink to show that our organization supports this worthy cause.

On September 17, 2006, our AAUW Branch contributed $255.00 to Join the Journey. Three members (Alice, Diane, and Debbie) participated in the 10 mile walk from Mayo High School to Silver Lake. For photos Click here. Join the Journey had over 700 walkers and raised $77,000. All of this money is used locally. Last year, proceeds from the Walk supported the following local efforts: (1) purchased 2,000 books; Mayo Clinic guide to Women's Cancers, given to all newly diagnosed Breast/Gyn cancer patients, (2) purchased breast exam teaching models for the Olmsted County Health department and Mayo Women's Cancer Program, (3) supported the American Cancer Society - Hope Lodge expansion project, (4) provided funds for Hawthorne Health Fair, which promoted breast cancer awareness/screening to women with English as a second lanugage, (5) supported the Strengthening Healing educational series of Mayo Clinic Women's Cancer Program, and (6) provided funding for the Summer, 2006 Mayo Clinic Cancer Education Newsletter, "Together," which will focus on breast cancer awareness and new treatment modalities, reaching 30,000 readers. Check out their website for more information. Join the Journey.

College Is Possible! We Can Help.

The Rochester AAUW Branch in collaboration with the Youth Commission of Olmsted County (YCOC) and Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) successfully launched a free half day conference at RCTC on March 25, 2006, ofr more than fifty high school students, representing diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds.

Jerry Casper, RCTC Theater Director, delivered the opening address: What Am I Doing Here? A panel of current college students, representing diverse challenges of age, finance, language and scholarship, discussed their experiences of entering college and maintaining their pursuit of a college education.

The students were divided into small groups and rotated through four thirty minute workshops which focused on: Admissions, Financial Aid, Transition: High School to College and College Life. The workshops were presented by the RCTC Staff, who provided many handouts and forms.

College representatives from fifteen area colleges were available to the participants during the lunch break to discuss admissions, financial aid, and curriculum specific to their college.

Transportation, required by many of the participants, was provided by buses from the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester, through an arrangement with an AA
UW member at the B&GC.

Youth Commisioners, RCTC Ambassadors and AAUW volunteers kept the students on track and provided support.

Our Rochester AAUW Branch would like to recognize the generous grant provided by the Rochester Area Foundation which helped to support this outstanding community project.
